We spent a long time wondering what to buy Emilia as a big sister gift. We weren’t really sure if it was something we needed to buy or not. However with the Coronavirus situation we decided to splash out and get her some lovely gifts to celebrate her becoming a big sister.
I have made no secret about the fact that we have made some drastic reductions to Emilia’s screen time. You can read more about it here. She currently has around 30 minutes to an hour a day, occasionally we watch a whole Disney film but not often. So our first choice may seem like an odd selection.
We did however take a lot of time deciding and felt the Amazon Fire Kids Tablet* was a great idea for her main big sister gift.
As I mentioned Emilia does have screen time, and often this is using our ipad. So we didn’t feel like this was any different. We can still limit her access, the parental controls on the Fire are excellent. There is so much you can customise to make sure they only see what you want them to see and you can also set time limits. I would rather her use her screen time for interactive games or educational ones if possible, so we will promote it for this mainly.
We also felt that as I may be on my own with her a lot of the time depending on how long the lockdown continues it would be a great tool to keep her entertained. There will be times when I’m stuck under a feeding/sleeping baby and Emilia will be able to sit with us and use her tablet if she doesn’t want to read or play on her own.
I did ask around for opinions from other parents, you may have seen on my Instagram stories, and the general consensus was really positive. We also felt that as Emilia grows the tablet will have other benefits. We can use it for holidays and car journeys for example. And technology is such a huge part of our lives now, rightly or wrongly I think it is an important skill to be able to navigate.
I wanted however to make sure she had some other bits to make a small little bundle of big sister gifts. She has missed out on so much over the last few months that I felt we could be a little extravagant.
I also wanted something to celebrate Emilia’s new role as a big sister, and found the perfect book. It’s called You’re the Biggest*. It is a lovely keepsake book, perfect as a big sister gift or for a big brother as well. It is such a sweet book all about the role of an older sibling and how much they will teach the youngest.
Emilia has also recently got into playing with her soft toys, so I wanted to get her a lovely new toy off the baby. And as Jellycat are so well made I went with one of their puppy toys. She doesn’t have a puppy toy, and yet she loves dogs so I got the Bashful Toffee Puppy* I am sure she will absolutely love it, it is so cute and something that she can look after.
It is hard to know what to do for the best when it comes to welcoming a new baby into the house, and whether you buy a gift is completely personal preference. In different circumstances we may not have bought anything, or maybe not as much. I can’t wait to see her reaction to her little baby sister, and the gifts that she is going to bring for her.
Did you do older sibling gifts?
