Rediscovering my love of reading

Rediscovering my love of reading

One thing I have missed since becoming a Mum is reading, up until recently I think I have finished just one book since Emilia was born.

I have always loved reading, and I often look back and wish I had done my degree in English Literature. It is so easy to forget your own hobbies when your time is taken up by tiny humans. I genuinely forgot how much I enjoyed reading and getting lost in a book. Any time I found for myself I spent scrolling on my phone catching up with everyone else’s lives or getting out the house. Going to the football, shopping with family or for a spa treatment for example.

Then two of my favourite bloggers Rachael and Katie setup themummybook club on Instagram.

At first I followed the account just to support them, but as they shared more books, and started to introduce the books for the book club I felt a buzz about getting involved. I recently finished the first book I’ve read in well over a year (The Flat Share) which was recommended by one of the girls and so I decided to take the plunge and join in with June’s pick.

I am really enjoying the book, which is After the End by Claire Mackintosh. I am well over half way through the book, and so I’m sure I can finish it in time for the chat. I am really invested in the story, and am enjoying the way it is written. The three different perspectives, and then in the second half of the story the author writes the different ways the story could go.

It is quite an emotional read especially as a Mum but I definitely feel like I can’t put it down. I am constantly telling myself just one more chapter. I have found it a really thought provoking read so far, and have often sat long after I’ve put it down contemplating how I would handle the situation. At the moment I have no idea how it will end and I love that about a book. I would never have chosen this book if it wasn’t for the book club and so I definitely have them to thank for reigniting my love of reading.

Reading is something both Rachael and Katie absolutely love, that was clear when I asked them more about their new Instagram book club.

What made you decide to set up Themummybookclub?

Rachael – I actually messaged Katie asking if she wanted to buddy read something together & share it on Instagram/blogs and it just escalated into wanting to share our love for books & reading on a bigger scale. We then thought it would be a great idea to encourage others to join in and then The Mummy Book Club was born!

Katie – Yes, like Rachael said she messaged to ask if I wanted to read along with her so I suggested maybe a book club. 10 mins later I set up our Instagram page. We really didn’t think anyone would be interested but thought we’d just grab the name incase someone else used it.

Who chose this month’s book – After the End?

Rachael – I can’t actually remember who chose this months book – I think it was me! We usually bounce a few books between us both and narrow it down based on what genre we want to do, we also try and plan so we do a mixture of old & new releases. We always have to agree on the book we pick.

Katie – With the monthly books we always agree completely. Dear Edward was on both of our TBR’s and with After the End I think I sent lots of screen grabs of new books coming out and Rachael picked After the End. We already have a few future books picked out too.

What is your favourite thing about running the book club?

Rachael – I love having someone to bounce ideas off who shares the same love of reading as me. and seeing people joining in & sharing the months book is AMAZING. It honestly makes my day.

Katie – My favourite thing is sharing it all with Rachael. There’s no pressure and it’s all so fun. I love reading and it’s totally got me reading more too.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

Rachael – A book I think everyone should read is….All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

Katie – One book I think everyone should read is The Flat Share; absolutely loved it.

You can follow the book club on Instagram, and join in with the monthly reads and discussions here: themummybookclub they have a link to this month’s book in their profile. And if you’d like to read more about some of my favourite books you can check out my post on my 3 Favourite Books here.
